You can get car insurance from Geico for a driver with a learner’s permit by either adding the new driver to an existing policy or taking out a separate policy. Most of the time, a driver with a learner’s permit lives with parents or a significant other who is licensed and has insurance. If that is the case, getting coverage is as simple as calling Geico at (800) 841-3000 to add the new driver to the existing policy. This will give them the same coverage as the primary driver.
You can also add a new driver through your online Geico account. If you’re a new customer, you can get a quote online.
How Adding a Driver With a Learner’s Permit Impacts Your Rates
Adding someone with a learner’s permit to an existing Geico policy might not affect your rates much because the permitted driver only has supervised time behind the wheel. But once they have their license, the cost of the policy probably will go up a lot. That’s because new drivers (especially teenagers) have a much higher risk of accidents than experienced drivers.
The good news is that if the driver is a teenager, Geico is the third-cheapest car insurance company for teens.
Getting Your Own Geico Insurance With a Learner’s Permit
If you have a learner’s permit but do not live with someone who already has car insurance, you’ll need to purchase a policy before getting on the road. You can purchase, register, and insure a vehicle with just a learner’s permit, and you can pay for your policy and get it activated the same day.
Even though Geico’s website says you need a valid driver’s license to get a quote, you can do the entire process without one. If you’re under the age of 18, you may need a parent or guardian to enter into a contract if you’re not legally emancipated, though.
Geico Discounts And Resources for New Drivers
Geico offers multiple discounts and resources for new drivers. Completing driver’s education or defensive driving programs helps permitted drivers learn the rules of the road and earn discounts. Student drivers may also get discounts if they have good grades, attend certain universities, or belong to certain student organizations.
Although Geico is a good option for new drivers with learner’s permits, you should always compare quotes from at least three different insurance companies to make sure you get the best rate.

You cannot get a policy with only a learners permit at GEICO. It requires a valid drivers license.
