Reckless driving affects insurance for at least 3-5 years, depending on the driver’s state and insurance company. During this period, a reckless driving conviction causes insurance rates to go up by an average of 140%. In addition to paying a higher premium, you will lose any good driver discounts that were previously applied to your rate.
Most insurance companies only look back a few years on a policyholder’s record, so even a major violation like reckless driving only affects rates for a relatively short period. But the lookback period is not always up to the insurer, as some states, like Massachusetts, have set periods of time for infractions to affect insurance.
Your state might also require you to file an SR-22 form after a ticket for reckless driving. An SR-22 verifies that you have the minimum amount of car insurance required by state law. In that case, even if the insurance company no longer sees the reckless driving conviction when they check your driving record, your rates won’t go down until you no longer need the SR-22.
