Evictions are not listed on credit reports. However, if you still owe back rent, your former landlord may have sold the debt to a collection agency, and a collection is a derogatory mark that will appear on your report.
You can find out if you have a collection account on file by checking your credit report for free here at WalletHub.
If a collection is mistakenly listed on your report, you can file a dispute with the credit bureaus to remove it. You cannot remove accurate items from your report, but any negative information will fall off after 7 years.
Eviction in Your Rental History
Prospective landlords can find out if you were previously evicted by using a service like Experian RentBureau or TransUnion SmartMove to search public records for your rental history. Although these services are offered by the credit bureaus, the information they provide is not listed on your credit report.
You can check your own rental history by asking your prospective landlord which company processes its tenant screenings and contacting them directly.
You can also sign up for credit monitoring to keep track of the entries on your credit report and get personalized credit-improvement tips for free here at WalletHub.
