You can remove medical debt from your credit report by filing a dispute with the three major credit bureaus. Medical debt under $500 and paid medical debt previously in collections will no longer be listed on consumer credit reports after the bureaus changed their policies in response to new regulations. If your medical debt fits those parameters but is still listed on your credit report, you can file a dispute to have it removed.
How to File a Dispute to Remove Medical Debt From Your Credit Report
- Locate the error and confirm it’s inaccurate.
- Choose a dispute method (online, phone or mail).
- File your dispute.
- Wait for the results (30 to 45 days).
Note, under the amended rules, medical debt over $500 that is outstanding for over a year will appear on your report. Once it is paid, however, it will fall off your report.
