Farmers is one of the more expensive car insurance companies, ranking in the bottom quartile among major insurers in terms of price. Fortunately, Farmers offers a wide variety of discounts to make its rates more affordable. In addition, Farmers auto insurance is a winner when it comes to coverage options and quality claims support.
Farmers Home Insurance Review Highlights
Farmers offers homeowners insurance and renters insurance, along with discounts for bundling multiple policies.
Farmers Smart Plan Home insurance policies are based on three customizable packages: Standard, Enhanced and Premier. Standard policies are designed for new homeowners and are meant to focus on affordability. Enhanced policies offer higher coverage limits and extra protections, like covering the cost to replace your roof, without deducting depreciation. Premier policies (not available in California) offer the highest coverage limits as well as Farmers’ Guaranteed Replacement Cost, which reimburses 100% of the cost to rebuild a home after a covered loss.
Renters insurance from Farmers protects your personal property, including furniture and electronics, from risks such as fire, theft, or acts of nature. It also protects renters from being sued by covering medical expenses for guests who get injured on a rental property. It covers any relocation expenses incurred as a result of a covered loss, too.
Overall, Farmers’ homeowners and renters insurance policies are dependable and affordable, especially for customers who bundle with a Farmers auto insurance policy.
Bottom Line: Is Farmers a Good Insurance Company?
Yes, Farmers is a good insurance company overall, and one of the best auto insurance providers in particular. In addition to auto insurance policies, Farmers offers home and life insurance policies, as well as coverage options for pets, businesses, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles. Umbrella insurance policies and identity protection services are also available.
Overall, WalletHub’s editors give Farmers insurance a rating of 2.8/5 because of its extensive coverage options and nationwide availability. However, Farmers still has room for improvement in the customer service and claims departments. @jrobin4629 I just posted a review describing a similar experience. So I totally feel your pain and understand. Farmers screwed us over much like the way they screwed you over. From now on, I am going to do everything I can to discourage people from doing business with Farmers. Terrible company, terrible employees. Sorry you went through such aggravation. I know what it feels like. Been there!

@teresabarnwell state farm screwed me over. I pay monthly for my roadside assistance. Used it 4 times in a year and a half for stupid stuff like locking my keys in my car. They called me 2 days ago to tell me they aren't going to renew my policy because I used what I paid for. All insurance companies are scams

They got zero stars from me. After paying premiums for 37 years, they refused to pay when we finally filed a claim. They used satellite pictures to claim the problem had been there longer than we realized, and it was too late to file a claim. Very unhappy with them and will be changing companies soon.

I have been treated poorly. All I want is common courtesy as an Uber driver, not understanding this process. Instead, I get your workers acting like I'm doing their job. No support with my accident, causing me a lot of bills. I need someone with patience.

I would leave 0 stars if it were an option. My husband and I just purchased our first home. So naturally, we were getting quotes on homeowners insurance from several companies. Most quotes I completed online and only called a very few. Farmers' quote was outrageous in comparison to the company we ended up getting coverage through, MO Farm Bureau. It was almost $1700/month with less coverage. I received a ton of emails following the quote. I replied to none of them. Then we started receiving calls and even mail letting us know our coverage was going to be canceled if the premium wasn't received. Given that we didn't ever agree to anything or even come close to starting a policy, I ignored them. Today I received a bill for $281.76. I called to get it resolved (877) 327-6392, and the representative informed me my date of birth didn't match their records, so he was unable to assist me. He then proceeded to inform me I would need to go to a local office to resolve this. We're out in the country, not close to any office. I know it wasn't his fault personally, so I politely let him know I wouldn't be doing that. He told me I could call back tomorrow between the hours of 0800 to 2000 and some other department could assist me. My husband is annoyed and will be contacting them tomorrow, but I'm just going to put a response on this bill, keep my own documentation, and mail it back. If this is how they do business, I will never be considering them in the future for anything. Not only is it inconvenient, it's unnecessary. I only got a quote from them because they offer a discount for the company I work for. I will also be advising corporate for my employer regarding their business practices and the BBB. If you are receiving home quotes, I urge you to proceed with caution. I'm not saying don't choose them if they're the best option for you, as I have personally never had coverage through them, but just be mindful of others' experiences so you know what you're getting into.

Review of Flood Insurance Cancellation Experience
I'm a small business owner—not a millionaire—and every dollar counts. On July 23, 2025, I paid $887 for flood insurance that was supposed to refund $590 after cancellation. I requested a cancellation a month ago, expecting a fair refund. Instead, I received a check for only $509.
That's a $378 loss for absolutely nothing. No coverage used, no explanation provided, and no accountability. The SBA requires flood insurance documentation for my business, and this situation has added unnecessary stress and financial strain.
I'm disappointed by the lack of transparency and fairness in this process. Small businesses deserve better—especially when we're trying to stay compliant and afloat.

Very disappointed with Farmers Insurance. When I first opened a policy, they were polite and quick to take my payment. Then an agent came out to inspect my property, and without any warning, they canceled my policy about two months later.
I called several times asking for a list of requirements so I could fix the issue, and each time they promised to email it — but never did. I've been trying for a week to resolve this and they completely ignore me.
Poor service, insincere politeness, and no real help. Definitely not recommended.

I have never done business with these people; however, they reported to the DMV that my vehicle's insurance had expired. I have never had insurance with them ever since I purchased my truck, it has been insured with USAA. Now the DMV has revoked my license plate, and I can't drive my car at all until I submit documents from USAA to them to clear my title. I have been fighting this for over a month and have not yet reached a resolution with the DMV, because they keep saying that they have not received the FS-1 after it has been sent by USAA twice, and I got copies of them. All because these people's mess.

After a recent burglary, I had a horrible experience with Farmers, and I wanted to warn others about the company. I will be terminating my policies soon and will never again do business with them. I recommend to anyone reading this review not to insure with Farmers. They lack basic humanity.
I have insured my autos and homes with Farmers since 1998, paying $4,000-$6,000 in premiums each year. I have filed very few claims.
On a Friday afternoon in September 2025, my home was burglarized, and over $35,000 worth of jewelry was taken. I immediately called my agent, and a claims adjuster was assigned. I assumed she would call me to help with securing my home and to discuss the next steps. I heard nothing. On Saturday, I called her and left a message. She phoned me on Monday. Over the weekend, I worked with friends to secure my door with a heavy chain and to cope with the trauma of the burglary.
Approximately 8 years ago, I had requested the standard jewelry minimum ($2,500) be increased to $10,000. Trusting my insurance agent, I did not check whether this change was made. When I moved to other homes, I assumed that the enhanced jewelry coverage was also moved. In fact, the jewelry coverage on my last home (which I left in 2022) was $5,000. When the theft occurred, I assumed that my coverage would be $10,000. However, my current home policy limits coverage to $2,500.
Despite several conversations and correspondence, the company refuses to increase my jewelry limit because I cannot provide an email or other proof that I requested the increased coverage. In essence, they are stating that I am lying.
My loss here is huge. I have been a loyal and excellent customer of Farmers for many, many years. I find the company's response to my situation lacks any compassion or respect for a long-term customer. The overall experience dealing with this company has been horrible.

I suggest that you avoid this company. I had a minor claim. Adjusters handling a water claim, which arose due to work performed by a contractor hired by my management company for a rental property I own, did everything possible to disclaim coverage for all or part of the claim. Farmers eventually disclaimed part of the claim, but did not provide a disclaimer letter citing the sections of the policy they relied upon. The subrogation adjuster, whose job it was to recover what the carrier paid, was extremely dismissive when I inquired about recovering my deductible and the portions of the claim that were denied. Apparently, there is no interest in pursuing the claim on my behalf.

I had liability coverage and changed to full coverage. They have been charging me for full coverage, and I have paid for more than 6 months. While I was driving, someone hit my car and ran away. I called Farmer Insurance to fix my car; they told me I was not under full coverage but only had liability coverage. I asked them why they had charged me twice more than what I paid when I had liability coverage. They gave a nonsensical answer, saying that everything has increased, which is why they added more to the payments. I'm not happy at all with Farmer Insurance. Pay attention when you get a quote from these people.

Farmers Auto Insurance is the worst. We recently bought a house and bundled a new auto policy with our homeowner's insurance. We knew a bill was coming up so we canceled our policy over a month in advance to make sure we had nothing else owed.
The first representative we spoke to at Farmers Insurance seemed so nonchalant and said we should probably call back to make sure this was done. I did, and nothing was canceled at all. We called again to get it canceled and they assured us that it was within plenty of time so that we would not be billed again. We got proof of cancellation; however, just a couple of days ago, we received a letter from a debt collector saying that we owed a certain amount of dollars for a refund check that we never received. Farmers Insurance stated that it was cashed, but that was not us and we have no record in our bank account statements for the past three months of any such transaction. They also said that after we allegedly cashed the refund check, which we did not, it tried to bill us and the check bounced. There is also no bank record of that whatsoever. They, in turn, sent that to a debt collection agency which put a ding in our credit score.
They literally have no proof of anything and now we have to pay this amount of money out of pocket so we can dispute it with the credit debt collector so that it can stop making hits on our credit score for something that we did not cause. We canceled well in advance to avoid anything like this.
After we had so many issues, we looked up the reviews and saw what a terrible company this is. They make it very hard to leave, they are dishonest about the work that they do and, without any warning, send stuff like this to debt collectors, which can jeopardize your financial stability. Negative infinity stars for this company. They're like a really terrible slumlord. I never had any issues like this with Geico and was with them for 15 years. Overall, this is abysmal, and I can't believe people do business like this. It seems this is their business model, and their mission statement is to take advantage of anyone they can. The only reason it's one star is because that's the lowest it'll let me go. Under no circumstances should anyone use this company; you will regret it, I promise.
Sincerely, A very unhappy customer... will never be back.

We have had multiple home insurance policies, a health insurance policy, and up to four auto insurance policies with Farmers. That is, until today. We have been with Tennessee Farmers for about 25 years. Today, I received a call, about a week after my 20-year-old daughter had an at-fault accident. The call was to inform us that since we are vacationing in Florida for months out of the year, we could no longer carry the auto portion of our policies. We were given 30 days to find new auto insurance and they would no longer be able to cover us. Keep in mind, my primary residence is in Tennessee and I also have a second home there.
I am so disappointed. I began making arrangements today to take all of my business elsewhere and was told a supervisor in the claims department made that decision. In 25 years, we may have had three claims. I do not recommend this company, as it is no longer a local business but corporate like everyone else. Go to the big three, as I found out today they are cheaper anyway, and both quotes I got from potential future companies were equal to or better than our current Farmers policy. It's just a bad look and a shame. I have paid this company tens of thousands of dollars over the years and am quite frankly shocked at their lack of loyalty to a long-standing customer. Find your insurance elsewhere.

I was hit by one of their customers. Since Texas is an at-fault state, they are responsible for addressing the damage. My car has been in the body shop for two weeks. A supplement from my body shop was sent to them a week ago, but I have not received any response. My body shop also hasn't heard anything back. They have given me paperwork of the at-fault driver's repairs/supplement, claiming it was mine they sent. I have repeatedly explained that they are mixing up me and their customer. I was given one appraiser's information; however, this individual never answers the phone. I called daily for a week. The other appraiser provided me with inaccurate information, claiming they had already contacted the body shop and resolved everything. However, my body shop reports that Farmers has never made contact. The representatives handling this claim do not answer the phone and only respond to texts, never promptly. They are giving me the runaround and have disrupted my livelihood with no regard for their delayed responses. I cannot obtain a rental until the work on my car begins, and they won't confirm whether they have approved the supplement sent to them a week ago for that to happen. I will never consider Farmers for my insurance needs in the future.

Farmers has a rating of 2.9 out of 5 from WalletHub's editors, based on factors such as pricing, coverage options, customer reviews and watchdog-group ratings. For example, Farmers has a rating of A from AM Best, meaning it is financially strong and in a good position to pay out claims.
Yes, Farmers insurance rates are competitive, as the company is one of the 10 cheapest auto insurers nationally, according to WalletHub analysis. Farmers car insurance customers pay an average of $1,044 per year for coverage. Farmers' car insurance rates are based on your driving record and experience, along with factors like the type of car you drive, your ZIP code, your insurance history, and more. Your coverage and deductible choices also impact your final quote,...
Farmers is cheap for families who have teen drivers, and even offers discounts specifically for those drivers, like the Farmers shared family car discount. This discount is for households that have more drivers than vehicles and a driver under the age of 21 in the home. Farmers is not one of the cheapest car insurance companies overall, though, and high-risk drivers, or drivers who need to have an SR-22 on file, may find cheaper rates...
Full coverage car insurance from Farmers costs $4,652 per year, on average, and is more expensive than a liability-only policy since it provides more coverage.

Drivers who have Farmers accident forgiveness will not see their car insurance rates go up at all after their first accident in 3 years, however. Even if the accident can't be forgiven, it will only affect your insurance rate for 3-5 years, depending on your state.
The exact amount that premiums go up after an accident depends on a few factors, including...
