The Platinum Card® offers 1 - 5 points per $1 spent, depending on the type of purchase. More specifically, with this card you can earn 5 points per $1 spent on flights booked with airlines or with American Express Travel® (up to $500,000 spent per year), 5 points per $1 spent on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel®, and 1 point per $1 spent on all other eligible purchases.
In addition to these ongoing rewards, you may be eligible to earn as high as 175,000 points for spending $8,000 on eligible purchases within the first 6 months (welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer; apply and, if approved, find out your offer amount and accept the card with your offer, spend $8,000 in 6 months, and receive the points). Charges for travelers’ checks, prepaid cards, gift cards, cash equivalents such as lottery tickets, fees, and interest do not earn points.
Things to know about the Platinum Card® points
- The Platinum Card® points are worth up to 1 cent each when redeemed for airfare or stays at Fine Hotels + Resorts® properties booked through the American Express Travel portal.
- Points used for most other forms of travel are worth up to 0.7 cents each.
- In addition, points are usually worth up to 1 cent each toward most gift cards, depending on the merchant. Plus, points are worth up to 0.6 cents toward statement credits or up to 0.7 cents when using the Pay with Points feature for purchases at major retailers, like Amazon or Best Buy.
Just remember that Platinum Card® point values are subject to change. Visit the Membership Rewards® Points calculator website for current point values and other redemption options. The Platinum Card® points do not expire as long as your account is open and in good standing. Points are forfeited when closing an account, so make sure to redeem them before that.
WalletHub estimated the value of American Express Membership Rewards points by comparing the dollar value of various redemption options to the number of points required. These values are approximate and intended for illustrative purposes only. Actual point values may vary based on redemption method and individual usage. The estimates provided do not represent fixed or guaranteed values and may differ from the experience of typical cardholders.
