You may need an SR-22 to reinstate your license if your license was suspended. An SR-22 is a form filed by your insurance company with your state’s DMV to certify that you have at least the minimum insurance coverage required by the state after serious offenses, like DUIs or driving without insurance.
On the other hand, if your license simply expired and you are trying to get it reinstated, you may need to reapply for a driver’s license and retake the required exams, but you will not need an SR-22.
You May Need an SR-22 to Reinstate Your License If You:
- Accumulate multiple moving violations in a short timeframe (four speeding tickets in 12 months, for example)
- Are caught driving without insurance
- Cause a serious accident while driving with a suspended license
- Cause a serious accident while driving without insurance
- Are convicted of a hit and run
- Have a reckless driving conviction
- Are arrested for DUI or DWI
- Cause an accident resulting in death while under the influence
If you are required to have an SR-22, your state will notify you by mail. In most states, you’ll only need an SR-22 for 3 years, though it may be required for longer for more serious offenses.
