Yes, car insurance covers paint damage if the policyholder has collision or comprehensive insurance. Collision insurance will cover paint damage if the damage was caused by an accident, while comprehensive coverage will pay if the paint damage was due to something besides a crash, like vandalism or a natural disaster.
Both comprehensive and collision insurance are subject to a deductible, so you won't be able to file a claim if the cost of the damage is less than your deductible. Additionally, if the damage is minor, it might not be worth filing a claim, since claims usually cause insurance rates to increase. However, filing a comprehensive claim will generally have less of an effect on your future insurance rates than a collision claim.
Drivers without these coverage types will need to pay out of pocket for paint damage. Similarly, if the paint damage was caused by normal wear and tear, car insurance will not cover it. For more information, check out WalletHub’s guide to what car insurance does and does not cover.
