An SR-22 stays on your record for at least 3 years in Washington. After the state-mandated SR-22 filing period ends, you will have to call your insurer so they can get the Washington DMV to remove the SR-22 from your driving record.
However, the violation that resulted in the mandatory SR-22 filing may remain on your record for longer. For instance, if you were convicted of a DUI in Washington, your SR-22 requirement will only stay on your record for about 3 years, while the DUI conviction can remain on your record for your whole lifetime.
Key Things to Know About Washington SR-22 Requirements
- An SR-22 is a form that "high-risk" drivers are required to file after a violation. Drivers are informed of an SR-22 filing requirement either by a court or by their local DMV.
- An SR-22 will remain on your Washington driving record for at least 3 years. Typically, you can get the SR-22 removed from your record when your filing period is over by calling your insurance company.
- You may be required to keep your SR-22 on file for longer if you allow your SR-22 insurance coverage to lapse. If your SR-22 coverage lapses, your insurance company is required to notify the Washington DMV, which may then suspend or revoke your driver's license, in addition to possibly restarting your SR-22 filing timeline.
- To see if an SR-22 is still on your record, you can check your Washington driving record by going to the Washington State Department of Licensing website and requesting a copy of your driving record.
