My dad passed away in 2023, and my mom took over the accounts (4 CDs) and a Money Market, and my brother and I went in with her when it was time to roll the CDs over, etc.
She kept all the funds as there was no need to withdraw any money at the time.
Unfortunately, my mother passed away last month, and after discussing it, my brother and I decided to close all the accounts and liquidate the funds between us, as I live in the NW and have my own credit union I work with.
When we visited the Colorado Springs branch on Kelly Johnson Drive, we were told they needed to hold the account as it had to be processed through their San Antonio location. We found this odd as my dad had dealt with two other financial institutions after my mom passed without any issues. We liquidated the accounts, with no questions or penalties, as this was a death and a direct beneficiary situation.
However, we waited three weeks, only to discover my brother wasn't officially listed as a beneficiary, even though we had visited with my parents several times to drive them to SSFCU and were told we were listed as beneficiaries. We both provided Social Security numbers and identification, and signed the necessary documents to confirm this.
When we hadn't heard from them for another week, I called and was given evasive answers about the delays in dispersing the funds, and they mentioned that we would have to pay a penalty for withdrawal since the CDs were set to renew in December. I was aware that such a fee should have been waived in the event of a death.
To make a long story short, I decided to call an attorney, and once they were involved, the funds suddenly became available with apologies.
After an exhausting few weeks and many hours on hold throughout this process, not to mention the grief of losing my mom, I advise not to waste your time with this institution.

What's worse is the lack of human support. Every time I've tried to call, I get stuck in an automated maze with no way to speak to a real person. There is no effective customer service or resolution path, which makes an already stressful financial situation even worse.
Even Chime doesn't charge NSF fees, which makes this all the more frustrating. Over my five years with SSFCU, I've probably paid well over $1,000 in NSF fees. I'm not someone irresponsible with money, but when I do run into a hardship, it's painful to be penalized by my own bank.
In contrast, Frost Bank has been far more humane and accessible. They don't charge NSF fees, and when I call, a real person answers and helps me. That kind of service matters.
I expected more from a credit union. SSFCU feels like a faceless institution that punishes struggling members instead of helping them. I'll be moving my banking over to Frost.
