Bottom Line: Is The General a Good Insurance Company?
Yes. The General is a good insurance company. Actually, to be specific, it’s a good insurance agency. The General sells auto insurance from other companies – Permanent General Assurance Corporation, Permanent General Assurance Corporation of Ohio, and The General Automobile Insurance Company, Inc. – so it’s technically an insurance agency not an insurance company. That won’t affect your bottom line, though.
What you really need to know is that The General is one of the best sources of auto insurance coverage for high-risk drivers with a history of accidents or driving violations. However, The General only offers auto insurance coverage, so customers don’t have the option to bundle multiple policies like with many other insurance providers.
Overall, WalletHub’s editors give The General a rating of 2.8/5. The General gets points for providing affordable auto policies to high-risk drivers, but it could improve its customer service and claims service. The General’s lackluster website also makes it hard to nail down coverage and discount details, and prospective customers must request a quote to learn more about their options. It’s 100% a scam! They’re the only “insurance” company that the policy only covers you in the state of purchase! I originally got a policy in Florida and moved to Alabama 40 miles north of the Florida state line and discovered that the $265/mo I’m paying them for PIP& Liability (was supposed to be full coverage) doesn’t cover me in Alabama at all. I sold P&C insurance for years and what they claim about different coverage minimums not following state to state is absolutely garbage! Minimum required coverage varies state to state yes but if you are licensed, registered and insured in your home state you 100% have coverage in the lower 48. I’m canceling their trash policy and going with someone else. Horrendous company and customer service! I thought Geico was bad, but they look golden by comparison to these scammers!

I am VERY disappointed in the General Insurance. I previously had a SR22 bond which was over $200. My driving record is not bad. I had an accident unexpectedly. I purchased a 22 Ford Bronco. The General quoted me with the SR22 bond over $800+with full coverage. I almost said some unprofessional choice words when they quoted me their price. I am insured through ALLSTATE $350 A MONTH. SR22 included in that price. I am very disappointed.

After my truck was totaled in an accident, I contacted The General multiple times to have the vehicle removed from my policy. Despite repeated requests and providing documentation showing I no longer possessed the truck, the vehicle remained on the policy for months and I continued being charged premiums for it.
When I later added a replacement vehicle, the issue still was not corrected, resulting in increased charges for coverage on both vehicles. I was eventually told my only options were to purchase a non-owner’s policy I did not want or cancel the policy altogether.
Although some adjustments were eventually made, The General still did not fully correct the billing issue as requested. My frustration is less about a mistake happening and more about the repeated failure to properly resolve it despite multiple calls and supporting documentation.

This is by far the worst insurance company I've ever had. Communication is very difficult, and their rates keep going up - even though I'm considered a good driver and the last time I was in an accident was 1973. If I were Shaq, I'd seriously consider if I wanted to represent this company anymore. It sucks.

One of the worst companies out there, getting business done via customer service is a hassle, and don't quit on them. It is a hassle to use their email service to get a refund. I requested it three times. I blocked them from my cards and banking information.

They are horrible. I received a collection call about $30.50 that said my premium was not paid and I wasn't insured. I advised them I was never with their company and they are asking for my current insurance so that they can cancel a policy I never had, stating this is the policy to cancel an insured. I have never heard of this a day in my life. They even tried to say that my child was a driver when she doesn't even have a license. I don't recommend them to anyone; look elsewhere.

Update: Initially, my experience with this company was very disappointing, and I left a negative review. However, after my feedback, they reached out promptly, addressed my concerns, and made things right. I appreciate their effort to turn the situation around.
A car swerved into my lane and hit me. It bent the passenger wheel, tie rod, and steering linkage, damaged the steering gear, the tire, bumper, bumper cover, and valance, made the ABS module go haywire, and set off the passenger airbag. I filed a claim with his insurance, The General, and was assigned a claims representative. She said it would likely be totaled and she'd send it to the adjusters.
No word for 3 weeks, despite calling every 2 days for an update. I left messages and she returned 2 of my calls. It was always just excuses. After 3 weeks, I got in touch with someone else. He apologized for the delay and said he would get on it. In 30 minutes, she called, said she'd get an update and call me right back, but didn't. I called 2 days later and she became very angry, raised her voice, and said it was my fault for not emailing her pictures. I reminded her I already had. When she looked, the pictures were there. I asked if we could escalate to management to get the adjusters moving and she became angrier. I called her boss and asked why I was expected to handle it myself, why I couldn't get information or responses, why it took so long to get my rental car, and why I was being treated so horribly when I'd been nothing but kind and polite. He said he would handle it, but he didn't. The next day, she emailed and said a check was issued to the shop to tear the car down to get more pictures. In 4 weeks, they hadn't even contacted the shop. Once they were in contact with the shop, the adjusters and claims representative were terribly rude, dismissive, and non-responsive to the shop. They fixed the car instead of totaling it, which was fine. But it took three and a half months to get the car back, and for 2 of those months, I had to figure out how to get back and forth to work. They refused to replace the ABS module or the bent wheel, so now I have to replace the module, and the vehicle wobbles because of the bent wheel. I didn't cause the accident and I absolutely did not deserve to be treated this way.

NEVER USE THIS COMPANY! ESPECIALLY DO NOT SIGN UP FOR AUTO PAY! I was notified at the beginning of December that my car insurance policy had lapsed. I signed up with Geico, and on January 2nd, I was notified that I would be automatically charged on January 5th for a new policy, which I never signed up for, and that was almost double the price of my previous policy. It would be automatically taken out of my account, so I immediately contacted customer service and found out they had charged me in December without my consent for a new policy. Therefore, I had to cancel over the phone, and the agent was extremely difficult to deal with. When I asked him if he was 100% sure I would not be charged on January 5th, he said yes, and he confirmed that I was aware the policy was being canceled by reading a disclosure. However, on January 5th, I was charged AGAIN! When I called back, the lady told me the agent hadn't unenrolled me from autopay, so it didn't cancel, which was no surprise to me because I had a feeling the agent did that on purpose because he was so difficult to deal with. I was told my money would be refunded in 2-7 days, and I filed a complaint for the call to be reviewed. I was also told I would receive a call with their results. Now, 10 days later, I still haven't received my money or a call. It seems that when you cancel, they figure they are trained to take a few extra payments from you if you did autopay and to make you call 20 times to get it canceled. This is exactly why people don't enroll in autopay, not because they won't pay the bill, but because companies can intentionally take money from you, blame it on an error, and then fail to refund your money!

No one should do business with this company. Their claims processing is slow, and they will not give you enough money to replace your vehicle if it's totaled in an accident. The claims processor simply stops taking your calls and forces you to return your rental car with no resolution, after offering a payout that is thousands of dollars below what is needed to purchase the exact same vehicle. The repair shops despise dealing with them, and some won't even look at your wrecked vehicle if you have your auto insurance with them.

I would give 0 stars, but it won't let me. I made my initial payment, and then two weeks later, while I was out of town, they sent another payment notice. I returned home on Saturday to a letter stating they were canceling my policy because I hadn't paid. That's just two weeks, and they canceled my policy around Christmas time. As a disabled veteran, I only receive my payment once a month, so I can't pay until the 1st. I'm on SR-22, and now I'm going to have my license suspended because they canceled my policy right at Christmas; they couldn't wait three more days. If this is how these people treat the men and women who served our country, then I'd advise all service members and veterans not to use their services. No one should use General; they are greedy and unscrupulous.

Shaq, you need to find a new company to endorse as they are damaging your reputation. The General is the worst insurance company I've ever dealt with. The General's client collided with the back of my company vehicle, totaling it on June 10th, 2025, and I'm still trying to get compensated. Video footage captured the entire incident. The adjuster never visited, they billed the body shop for storage costs, let the vehicle sit for 120 days without any contact or returned calls, and then I had to pay $466 out of pocket to move the vehicle. I have incurred $22,000 in rental fees because I had to rent a 26ft truck to replace the one they totaled. I hired a lawyer to attempt to recover what is owed to me for an accident that occurred 170 days ago. They agreed to pay me $25,000 a month ago, and now they are giving me trouble about that payment by insisting that I acquire a salvage title, not them, before they will settle. The employees do not follow up; they are unproductive and indifferent about me, my company, or the General's reputation. Once this is resolved, it will have cost me approximately $20,000 for an accident that was not my fault and I will have to purchase a $100,000 truck to replace the one that was fully paid off. If The General were my only option, I would forgo insurance altogether. It's unfortunate that a zero-star rating isn't available.

Someone with this cheap insurance company hit my car and claimed it was totaled by including amounts that should not have been part of the total damages. My insurance company and the repair service repeatedly communicated this to Wesley Suiter at 800-280-1466 ext 4352. Despite this, he insisted on exacerbating the situation by lying and being deceitful. He also denied providing me with a rental to get to work, even after it was proven that they should have. I hope the same negative energy is returned to them.

The General is cheap because the company sells directly to consumers and keeps overhead costs low. Not having agents means there are no commissions to pay, and the company lowers operating costs by offering basic coverage options and limited customer support online. The General ranked 4th overall in WalletHub's cheap car insurance review, partly because it offers discounts for good students and military service members. Plus, The General rewards customer loyalty with discounts for insuring...

The General sells policies in 47 states and has pretty good customer reviews on WalletHub, but it is more expensive than average. Yes, The General's non-owner car insurance is worth it, considering its low price. Non-owner liability insurance from The General is cheap compared to collision or comprehensive coverage, which pay for damage to your car.
