Yes, the Amex Gold Card does have travel insurance benefits, the best of which are trip delay insurance and baggage insurance. To be eligible to file a travel insurance claim, you’ll need to pay for your travel using your Amex Gold Card.
Types of Amex Gold Card Travel Insurance
- Trip delay insurance: This benefit reimburses you for necessary expenses, such as a hotel room, up to $300 per trip, if your trip is delayed for more than 12 hours (up to 2 claims per card per 12 consecutive month period).
- Lost/damaged baggage insurance: If your luggage is lost or stolen, you can get reimbursed for the contents of the luggage up to $1,250 for carry-on baggage and up to $500 for checked baggage, per covered person (in excess of coverage provided by the carrier). For New York State residents, there is a $10,000 aggregate maximum limit for all persons per trip.
- Rental car insurance: This benefit covers you against damage to the rental vehicle that results from a collision or theft. Coverage can be up to $50,000 for theft of or damage to most rental vehicles when you use your card to reserve and pay for the entire vehicle rental and decline the collision damage waiver or similar option offered by the car rental company (provides secondary coverage and does not include liability coverage). Not all vehicle types or rentals are covered. Geographic restrictions also apply.
Keep in mind that exclusions and coverage limits apply to many of these benefits, so make sure to check your Amex Gold Card’s guide to benefits for more details on each type of insurance.
