How Eligibility Is Determined
Capital One relies on merchant category codes to determine if a purchase qualifies for 3% cash back. Any entertainment-related purchases not coded “entertainment” will earn 1% cash back. This includes purchases at golf courses, country clubs (including membership fees), collegiate sporting events coded as “universities” or entertainment and resort packages categorized as “travel” or “hotel.”
Capital One does not set merchant category codes nor are they responsible for which codes merchants or third-party websites use.
