You can usually get a replacement credit card by contacting your issuer at the number you see on the back of the card. If you no longer have the card or the number is not readable, check your monthly statement or log in to your online account to find the correct contact information. In some cases, you may also be able to request a replacement through your online account or via the issuer’s mobile app.
If your card is lost or stolen, make sure to mention that when requesting a replacement. The issuer will deactivate your old card and send you a new one with a different card number. If you’re replacing a damaged card, the new one will usually have the same account number, and you may still be able to use the old card for online purchases until the replacement arrives.
What to Know About Replacing Your Credit Card
- In most cases, there’s no fee to replace a card, but it’s still a good idea to check your card agreement or confirm with customer service just to be sure.
- Once you make the request, the new card should arrive within 7 - 10 business days, though some issuers offer expedited shipping if you need it sooner.
- If your new card has a different number, you’ll have to update any recurring payments linked to your old card.
- If your card is about to expire, you don’t have to request a replacement. Credit card companies typically send a new one automatically before the expiration date.
Once your new card arrives, make sure to dispose of the old one securely. You can do that by shredding it, if your shredder supports plastic. You can also return the card to a local branch for proper disposal, or mail it back to your issuer if they offer that option.
