Yes, nearly all major grocery stores take American Express cards. ALDI, Meijer, ShopRite, Trader Joe’s, Vons, Whole Foods, and Winn-Dixie are among the large supermarket chains that accept American Express cards.
Be aware, though, that some smaller grocery store chains and independent merchants may not take American Express cards. So, check with these retailers beforehand if you plan to use an Amex card to pay for groceries at their stores. Costco is one major retailer that does not accept American Express credit cards for grocery purchases, as the warehouse club only takes Visa cards at its stores.
Earn rewards while shopping with Amex cards
If your favorite grocery store takes American Express cards, you could earn bonus rewards for grocery purchases, depending on which Amex card you use. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers 3% cash back at U.S. grocery stores, up to $6,000 spent annually, and 1% cash back after that.
Alternatively, big grocery spenders who don’t mind paying an annual fee can earn more with the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express. It gives 6% cash back on U.S. grocery store purchases, also up to $6,000 spent each year, and 1% after that.
