Roadside assistance plans cost around $10 to $100 or more per year, depending on whether you get them as an add-on to an insurance policy or through an auto club membership, credit card, phone carrier, or car manufacturer. Paying membership fees generally gives you a certain number of service calls at no extra charge.
How Much Roadside Assistance Costs With a Club Membership
- AAA: $64.99 to $124.99 year
- Better World Club: $62.95 to $114.95 per year
- AARP / Allstate: $66 to $131 for the first year
- Good Sam: $99.95 to $179.95 per year
- OnStar: $359.88 to $599.88 per year
Note: Good Sam often has sales, allowing you to get up to 50% off the price listed.
If you don’t want a yearly membership, several companies offer pay-per-use services. For example, Honk for Help charges between $93 and $165 depending on the service, while Allstate’s pay-per-use towing starts at $154.
Free Roadside Assistance Options
Cell Phone Companies
Some cell phone providers offer roadside assistance subscriptions, and a few offer roadside assistance as a free perk. T-Mobile offers one year of free AAA membership, for example. Similarly, Apple is offering two free years of roadside assistance if you purchase an iPhone 14 or 15, but you’ll have to enroll in AAA at the normal rate or pay per service call if you use Apple’s free feature without becoming a AAA member.
Credit Cards
Select credit cards offer roadside assistance to all cardholders. You may have to pay a small fee per service call, or you could get free coverage up to a certain amount – $50 per service call, for example.
Vehicle Manufacturers
Some car manufacturers offer complimentary roadside assistance when you purchase a new or certified pre-owned vehicle. These plans typically last for a limited number of years or until you’ve driven a certain number of miles. For example, Volkswagen’s roadside assistance coverage lasts for the first three years or 36,000 miles after purchasing your vehicle.
