What is the four year rule for Chase Sapphire Reserve?
The four-year rule for Chase Sapphire Reserve® used to prevent you from getting another initial bonus from any Chase Sapphire card if you've received one within the past 48 months. Chase Sapphire Reserve's initial bonus is 150,000 points for spend $6,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. However, this rule no longer applies.
Chase now states that you may not be eligible for a new cardmember bonus if you currently have any Chase Sapphire card, you previously owned one, or you received a new cardmember bonus from a particular Chase Sapphire card already.
Current Chase Sapphire Reserve Bonus Eligibility Explained
You may not be eligible to receive the initial bonus on the Chase Sapphire Reserve if:
- You currently have any Chase Sapphire card (including the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card), or
- You previously held this card or received a new cardmember bonus for it.
Chase evaluates eligibility on a case-by-case basis and may consider the number of cards you've had, along with other factors, when determining bonus eligibility.
This rule intends to prevent churning, where people repeatedly open and close credit cards just to receive the initial bonus. Since the Chase Sapphire Reserve bonus is so generous, Chase limits how often customers can qualify for it, ensuring the offer is reserved for new or returning cardholders who haven't benefited from a Sapphire bonus.
