Editor's Overview:
- The Winner: WalletHub
- Personal Capital rebranded to Empower, and its budgeting tool is called the Empower Personal Dashboard. Mint closed down, and Credit Karma is Intuit's budgeting tool now.
- WalletHub is better than Personal Capital/Empower Personal Dashboard and Mint/Credit Karma because it offers a larger number of budgeting tools for free. WalletHub has more non-budgeting tools, too.
- WalletHub Premium offers more features for a low price. Credit Karma and Empower do not offer premium plans with advanced budgeting features.
- WalletHub and Empower both let you create budgets and set goals for your savings. Credit Karma does not have this tool, but it does let you sync your financial accounts for automatic income and expense tracking.
- WalletHub is the only one of the three apps that offers a subscription manager, which lets you see all of the recurring subscriptions you're paying for and cancel them if you no longer need them.
Note: Mint is no longer available. The company that owned it, Intuit, is marketing Credit Karma as a replacement for Mint, so we will compare Credit Karma’s current features in place of Mint. Credit Karma lets you view your monthly spending by category and see how it compares to the previous month. Unlike Mint, though, it doesn’t let you truly make a budget or create savings goals.
In addition, Personal Capital has been renamed to Empower Personal Dashboard. For that reason, we will be referring to Mint and Personal Capital as Credit Karma and Empower throughout the rest of this article.

Empower vs. Credit Karma vs. WalletHub: Cost

| Company | Empower Personal Dashboard | Credit Karma | WalletHub |
| Free Plan Available | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Premium Plan Cost | Not offered | Not offered | $7.99 per month, billed annually (SAVE 50.0%) |
All three apps offer a free plan. WalletHub’s free account gives you access to a variety of helpful features, allowing you to make a budget, plan how you’re going to get out of debt, and import transactions from your financial accounts. It also lets you see a summary of important financial alerts and check your credit score and credit report, among other features.
Credit Karma’s free plan lets you sync your financial accounts to automatically track your income and expenses, provides insight on your spending on a monthly basis, and lets you see your net worth. Empower has the same features while also allowing you to create a budget, set goals and more.
Since WalletHub offers the most features for free, it wins in this category. Plus, if you want even more features, like identity theft insurance and dark web monitoring, WalletHub’s premium plan starts at just $7.99 per month, billed annually (SAVE 50.0%), and it gives a ton of value.

Empower, Credit Karma, and WalletHub all allow you to sync your financial accounts to automatically track your spending and better manage your finances. WalletHub wins this category because it can automatically load your accounts from your credit report, and then use that to help you make a budget. With Empower, you must add accounts manually, and with Credit Karma, you can’t make a budget.
Empower vs. Credit Karma vs. WalletHub: Debt Payoff Plans
Winner: WalletHub
| Company | Empower | Credit Karma | WalletHub |
| Debt Payoff Tool | Debt repayment calculator | Debt repayment calculator | Debt payoff plan |
| Available for Free | Yes | Yes | Yes |
All three apps offer debt payoff plans that can help you figure out how to get debt-free in the shortest period of time and at the lowest cost. WalletHub and Credit Karma let you pick a date for when you want to pay off the debt, and then can show how much you will need to pay each month to accomplish your goal. Empower lets you see how long debt payoff would take with the snowball method (paying off the smallest debts first) and the avalanche method (paying off the debts with the highest interest rates first).
Even though all of these sites provide their debt payment plans for free, WalletHub wins this category because its tool automatically fills in your debt information from your credit report.
Empower vs. Credit Karma vs. WalletHub: Subscription Manager
Winner: WalletHub
| Company | Empower | Credit Karma | WalletHub |
| Offers Subscription Manager | No | No | Yes |
| Available for Free | N/A | N/A | No |
WalletHub is the only app out of the three that provides a subscription-manager feature. Empower and Credit Karma do not offer this feature.

Both WalletHub and Empower allow account sharing, which lets you give family members and friends access to your account. This can help you manage your household finances better since you can get input from others. These apps also give everyone separate logins.
Both Empower and WalletHub allow you to share your account with up to five other people (for a total of six, including you). As a result, the two apps tie in this category. Credit Karma does not allow account sharing.
Empower vs. Credit Karma vs. WalletHub: Budgeting Templates
Winner: WalletHub
| Company | Empower | Credit Karma | WalletHub |
| Number of Budgeting Templates | 1 | 0 | 5 |
Empower gives you only one way to budget. WalletHub has five different strategies/templates to choose from. WalletHub users can budget by focusing just on their total income and expenses, or using the pay-yourself-first strategy, the 50/30/20 rule, envelope budgeting or micro-envelope budgeting. In other words, users can pick the strategy that works best for their financial situation, which is why WalletHub wins this category. Credit Karma does not let users create a budget on their account.

Empower also shares a few free features with Credit Karma and/or WalletHub, such as net-worth tracking and the ability to track the value of your real estate.
All three sites provide recommendations on financial products, but Empower seems to be more focused on investments while WalletHub and Credit Karma can recommend the best credit cards, loans and other types of accounts. WalletHub considers more offers when making recommendations, however, as Credit Karma focuses on products from partners.
Overall, WalletHub and Credit Karma offer the most features, so they tie in this category.
