You should be eligible for an American Express credit card if you have a good credit score of 700 or higher and you earn more than you spend. You also need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number to qualify for an Amex card.
American Express Eligibility Requirements
- Credit score: 700 or higher (at least good credit)
- Age: 18+ years old
- Residency: Applicant must have a U.S. address, not a P.O. Box
- SSN/ITIN: A valid Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is required. If you don’t have credit history in the U.S. but you have a credit card or loan in certain countries, you might be able to get approved without an SSN or ITIN.
It’s important to point out that not all these Amex eligibility requirements are set in stone. For example, it’s possible that an excellent credit history can outweigh a relatively low salary, or vice-versa. Some forums even report approvals for people with credit scores around 630, or salaries of $40,000.
The application’s success ultimately depends on whether these factors combine to create what Amex would consider a creditworthy person. To learn more, check out our article about how to determine your approval odds for an Amex card.
