Chase Sapphire Preferred Rewards
Chase Sapphire Preferred is one of the best travel rewards cards on the market, according to WalletHub’s editors. For starters, you get an initial bonus of 75,000 points for spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. Those points are worth $750 when redeemed for cash, gift cards, and travel.
In terms of ongoing rewards, Chase Sapphire Preferred offers 5 points per $1 spent on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 2 points per $1 on all other travel purchases, 3 points per $1 on dining and online grocery purchases, 3 points per $1 on select streaming services, and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases. Those earning rates solidify the card as one of the best options for travelers.
Key Things to Know About Chase Sapphire Preferred Rewards
- No maximum or expiration: There is no maximum number of points you can earn, and your points never expire as long as your account is open and in good standing.
- Transfer partners: You can transfer your points at a 1:1 ratio to the loyalty programs of many partnered airlines and hotels, like Southwest, JetBlue, Hyatt and Marriott.
- Shop With Chase: You can get 1 to 15 bonus points per $1 spent when you make purchases at more than 450 popular retailers.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Benefits
Annual Hotel Credit
Chase will reimburse the first $50 you spend on hotel purchases through the Chase Travel portal every year. While you won’t earn points on this $50, that doesn’t matter much since you’re getting a 100% return on the money. That helps to offset a large portion of the $95 annual fee!
No Blackout Dates or Seat Restrictions
If you use your card or your reward points to book reservations through Chase Travel, you won’t face restrictions on the dates and seats you can pick.
No Foreign Transaction Fee
It costs nothing extra to use Chase Sapphire Preferred to buy things from foreign merchants, either while abroad or online.

If you need roadside assistance, you can call 1-800-350-1362 to access a 24/7 help line for:
- Towing
- Tire changing

This is a pay-per-use service, not a free one, but it’s still a convenient thing to have access to.

| Type of Travel Insurance | Coverage Amount |
|---|---|
| Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance | Up to $10,000 per traveler |
| Trip Delay Reimbursement | Up to $500 per traveler per trip |
| Travel Accident Insurance | Up to $500,000 per traveler |

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance
If an unforeseen situation like sickness or severe weather causes your trip to be canceled or stopped early, you can get reimbursed up to $10,000 per traveler and $20,000 per trip. In order to receive this coverage, which applies to prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses, you must pay for the trip with your card.
Trip Delay Reimbursement
If the travel provider delays your trip by more than 12 hours, or if you need to book an overnight stay due to the delay, your card will reimburse you up to $500 per traveler per trip to cover related expenses, like food and lodging, that you wouldn’t have had to pay for normally.
Travel Accident Insurance
If you book a trip with your card and you’re injured in transit, you can receive up to $500,000 in accidental death or dismemberment coverage. The exact amount of coverage that you get will depend on how severe the accident is.
Baggage Delay Insurance
If your baggage arrives at least six hours late, you can get reimbursed up to $100 per day, for up to five days. The purpose of this reimbursement is to pay you back for essential purchases you have to make without your luggage, such as clothing and toiletries.
Lost Luggage Reimbursement
If your luggage gets lost, damaged or stolen during transit, this benefit can reimburse you up to $3,000 per person per trip, to cover the cost of the luggage itself and its contents. There are also sub-limits to this policy: you can only be reimbursed up to $500 for jewelry and watches, and $500 for cameras and other electronic equipment.
Auto Rental Coverage
When you rent a car with Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can get up to $60,000 in coverage for collision damage and theft. In order to receive this benefit, you’ll have to decline any insurance that the rental car agency offers.

Chase Sapphire Preferred stacks up pretty well against the rest of the market for purchase protection coverage, according to WalletHub’s Purchase Protection Study.
Extended Warranty Protection
Coverage details: When you make purchases with your card that come with a manufacturer’s warranty of up to three years, this benefit extends that warranty by one additional year. There are several exceptions to the types of items covered, so make sure to read your benefits guide.
