Citizens Bank Personal Loan Review
Citizens Bank offers personal loans with no fees and a relatively low APR, at 6.79% to 20.88%. These loans are best for people with fair-to-good credit, as people with excellent credit will be able to find slightly lower minimum rates elsewhere. Citizens Bank’s minimum credit score for personal loans is 680, which is just before the start of the good credit range. Another positive quality of Citizens Bank personal loans is that it’s possible to apply with a co-applicant, something many lenders don’t allow.
While Citizens Bank only has branches in 11 states, that won’t stop people in other states from qualifying for a loan. Citizens Bank has a national lending division called “Citizens One” with the same terms on personal loans.

CITIZENS BANK BLOWS. I literally am going to do everything in my power to get rid of this frickin bank. They always block ur card because they think it’s fraud and when I try to get help I have to wait for HOURS and finally when I get someone to help they are foreign and don’t know English and literally can’t spell ANYTHING. My lady didn’t even know what Rhode Island was and I had to tell her how to spell ISLAND. If you are fine with autistic people handling your money/life savings, citizens is just for you!
I had an old HSBC account that moved to Citizens, which proceeded to charge a dormant account fee until the balance was basically zero. As if that legalized thievery weren't bad enough, Citizens won't let me close the account until the balance is zero. If I don't close it in time, they will keep charging a fee. In other words, it is possible I might have to pay them for the privilege of having an empty account. It is just an awful customer experience, and I hope never to do business with Citizens ever again.
how can wallet hub give them 4 stars, when a LOT Of their latest reviews are 1 star? well that was back in 2020. seems like a LOT of banks, utilities, and others have turned rogue in the last couple of years since covid. I understand they have losses to make up for maybe, but you still have to treat the customer fairly and by the letter of the law.
i was forced to take a citizens bank account; but they never mailed me a checking account statement after my account was sold/transferred to them. it was a FEE FREE account and now my savings account is nearly drained. It still isn't over yet, but i BET they will allow it to go negative and not let me close it. another 2-3 months based upon their fees and it will go negative. I've filed a BBB complaint and see how that goes.
I also apparently have a CC with them, but they won't let me into the account because I don't have the full 16 digit CC number. without it, i can't get into the account nor build and online profile. but i was told "its okay, because your account is set up for auto payment'. REALLY? so it will take me 17 years to pay off like $3k? because i can't get in and make more than the minimum payment?
A warning to any students - DO NOT FINANCE STUDENT LOANS WITH CITIZENS First of all, you should know that Citizens uses Firstmark as their servicer. Check out the reviews for Firstmark...it's not good.
The servicer, Firstmark, lost one of my loans in their system and accidentally marked it as cancelled. As a result, the funds were paid to my school, but didn't show up on my account or credit. Over a year later, I get a call from Firstmark that they found the loan and that I need to pay. I had already refinanced post-graduation during the pandemic and locked in an amazing rate (2.9% fixed for 10 years) with a different lender, Sofi. Firstmark supervisor suggested I call Citizens refinancing to discuss options for this singular loan, so I did.
The Citizens employee on the phone basically said it was my fault for not realizing the loan was lost due to a system glitch and when I asked if I could dial the Firstmark supervisor into the call, she said..."I'm actually leaving for the weekend soon". Listen, I get it, we all work and we all want to enjoy our weekends, but this was like 7 minutes into the call. (My phone call lasted about 10 minutes total.) When I asked about having a call with both Citizens and Firstmark the following Monday, she responded by urging me to just call back on the general line instead and that I can try, but there's nothing to be done and it's a waste of my time.
tldr: Citizens employees don't care about you and won't help you. They just want to sit around and get paid. If you run into any extenuating circumstances or issues, it's difficult to be connected with someone who is either willing to help you or is willing to escalate to a supervisor. Most people probably don't have peculiar issues with the loan servicer, but if you happen to be one of them, you're basically screwed.

My Citizens branch manager talked me into taking a 3% cash back credit card promotion October 2022. I don't need another credit card but they talked me into it on the basis of 3% cash back. I received the card and started using it. First statement shows the standard 1.8% that I am already getting on another Citizens card that I no longer use. I get 2% from another bank. I have talked to 6 people including my branch manager that talked me into this bait and switch scheme. Each time I am told that it will be adjusted to 3%, but it is still only earning 1.8%. I stopped using it after the first statement. Today a Citizens representative had the nerve to call me to tell me the request for an adjustment was received on Jan 3, 2023 and told me that it will be another few billing cycles to adjust. I didn't ask them to call me, I already told them I won't do business with them any longer. I have phone record proof that I made the initial complaint on Nov 14, 2022. After complaining to my branch manager, my free quest checking account was hit with a $25 fee, first time ever. This has gotten to the point of harassment!
Citizens bank punishes customers who may be overdrawn on their account by holding the customers check deposits despite longstanding history of releasing full fund immediately. If a customer complains then there is more punishment in the form of extending hold times (by resetting the time by picking up the call and replacing on hold)
Worse Bank Ever since Hsbc acquisition. I maintained well over 30k and they still charged several maintenance fees. Closed out , and Rep didn't even mention the fees prior to closing.
The HELOC was a way for me to consolidate some bills into one payment. This is achieved by paying interest only for the first 10 years. In addition, you can make principal payments so far this has work, but I am looking for a solution to move on from this.
I closed my checking account with Citizens and now just have a Savings account. I keep getting a letter now asking me to verify my account online. When I try to do so, there is no option to "verify" my account. I spent an hour on hold to be told that I need to sign up for a new debit card. I told the rep I do not want a new debit card, and his response was that, if I don't want a card, I need to visit a branch and sign a paper. What for?? I just want to keep my savings account and that's it, why do I have to be inconvenienced to go into a branch to sign a paper? I believe this must be the bank's way of saying, get a debit card or leave us. I was placed on hold, and now still waiting for this rep to come back to resolve the matter . Oh, he just disconnected me, Absurd! Wasted 58 minutes of my non-work time that I would much rather have spent with my family, and the issue is not resolved. So, I will be closing this account and put my savings with one of my friendly banks. I gave 1 star because I couldn't give zero! I do not recommend anyone banking with Citizens...find a people friendly bank!

Yes, you can refinance a Citizens Bank personal loan using either a new personal loan or a balance transfer credit card from a different lender. By paying off your remaining Citizens Bank balance with a new, lower-interest loan or credit card, you will shift what you owe to the new lender and save money on finance charges.
How to Refinance a Loan from Citizens Bank With a New Loan
Check your credit score. Checking your credit helps you see if you're able to get approved with the score you have or if you need to spend some time improving it. You can check your credit score for free on WalletHub.
Get pre-qualified (if possible). Pre-qualifying shows you which lenders may approve you and what rates may be available to you. You can pre-qualify with multiple lenders for free on WalletHub.
Apply for the new loan. You can apply for the loan online, in person or over the phone. You'll need to give the lender some personal information when you apply, like your name, address and date of birth. The lender will also need some financial information, like your employment status and income.
Wait for funds. You should get your loan within a few business days of being approved. The lender will either write you a paper check or do a bank transfer.
Pay off the old loan. Once you receive the money, you'll need to pay off the old loan.
Repay the new loan. After the old loan is paid off, you'll then need to repay the new loan. This could take a few months or years to do.
Refinancing a Loan from Citizens Bank With a Balance Transfer
The biggest difference between using a balance transfer credit card and a personal loan for refinancing is that many cards offer 0% introductory APRs. If you can pay off your loan before the introductory period ends, you won't have to pay interest.
You should refinance a personal loan from Citizens Bank if it saves you money. Ideally, your new loan or credit card should have a lower APR than your old loan. You can qualify for a lower APR if your credit score and overall financial situation are better than when you got the first loan.
Finally, it's worth noting that Citizens Bank does not offer personal loan refinancing services for its own loans. In other words, you can't use a Citizens Bank loan to pay off another Citizens Bank loan and get a lower interest rate in the process.
Here's how you can apply for a Citizens Bank credit card:
Online: Visit the Citizens Bank website and navigate to the credit cards section. From there, choose the card you would like to apply for and click on “Get Started” to be redirected to a secure online application form.
Over the phone: Call (888) 333-5145 and follow the prompts to get connected to a customer service representative.
In person: You can also apply for a credit card at any Citizens Bank branch during normal business hours.
You might also receive a pre-approved letter in the mail if Citizen Bank considers you eligible for one. Just keep in mind that being pre-approved doesn't guarantee your approval for the card. You might still get denied if you decide to apply.
