Erie is cheap in part because it offers an optional feature called Erie Rate Lock, which keeps your rate the same year after year until you modify your policy, by changing your address or adding a new vehicle or driver, for example. Erie also automatically gives policyholders First Accident Forgiveness after three years. First Accident Forgiveness will not raise your rates after an accident you were at fault for, and you can only get it if you don’t have Erie Rate Lock on your policy.
Erie is particularly cheap for drivers who have full coverage policies, according to WalletHub research, though Erie is not one of the cheapest car insurance companies overall. Young drivers are especially likely to find cheaper rates elsewhere.
Average Rates for Erie Car Insurance vs. Top Competitors
Company | Minimum Coverage | Full Coverage |
$216 per month | $422 per month
$238 per month | $455 per month
$129 per month | $336 per month |
Note: Premiums are representative of a full coverage in NY; individual premiums will vary.
Your final premium is based on a variety of factors, though, such as your driving record, insurance history, and more. Every insurance company determines their rates differently, so the best way to find a good deal is to compare quotes from multiple insurers and take advantage of every discount.
