Amex Gold Card Rewards
The Amex Gold Card is an expensive but lucrative travel rewards card. You may be eligible to earn an initial bonus as high as 100,000 points for spending $6,000 on eligible purchases within the first 6 months (welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer; apply and, if approved, find out your offer amount and accept the card with your offer, spend $6,000 in 6 months, and receive the points). That can help pay for the card’s $325 annual fee for more than a year.
When it comes to ongoing rewards, the Amex Gold Card offers 4 points per $1 at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 spent per year), 4 points per $1 at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 spent per year), 3 points per $1 on flights booked directly with airlines or on AmexTravel.com, 2 points per $1 spent on prepaid hotels and other eligible purchases booked on AmexTravel.com, as well as 1 point per $1 on all other eligible purchases. There are a few other things worth pointing out about the card’s rewards, too.
Key Things to Know About Amex Gold Card Rewards
- Spending caps: There is no maximum number of points you can earn, but you’re limited in the number of bonus points you can get each year. In other words, if you hit the spending cap in certain bonus categories, you’ll switch to earning the base rate of 1 point / $1 on any further purchases in those categories. The good news is that the spending caps are very high.
- No expiration: Your points do not expire as long as your account is open and in good standing.
- Transfer partners: You can transfer your points, usually at a 1:1 ratio, to the loyalty programs of partnered airlines and hotels, such as Delta, JetBlue, Hilton and Marriott.
- Pay With Points: You can use your points to pay for purchases with several different online retailers. They include Amazon, Best Buy, Dell, Grubhub, Rite Aid, Saks Fifth Avenue and more. Plus, you can pay with points when checking out through PayPal.
- Other redemption options: You can redeem your points for travel, statement credits, gift cards, and charitable donations.
