To add a driver to your car insurance policy, call your car insurance company directly or update your policy online. You will simply need to provide your insurer with the new driver’s personal information, including their date of birth, Social Security number, and occupation. Some insurers may also want to know about the length of the individual’s driving record and any recent tickets or accidents.

When to Add a Driver to Your Insurance Policy
In general, it’s a good idea to add a driver to your insurance policy if they live with you, have a driver’s license, and have regular access to your car. Once you add the driver, you may see an impact on your insurance rates, depending on the person’s driving history. If the person you’re adding is considered high-risk, you could see your premium spike.
If someone who doesn’t live with you is going to use your car a handful of times with your permission, then you do not need to add them to your insurance policy. Most insurance policies cover permissive use, meaning that your coverage will apply to most drivers you allow to borrow your car. However, exceptions to permissive use usually include drivers who live in your household (who should be added to the policy) and drivers you have specifically excluded from your policy.
