Discover® Reviews
The WalletHub rating is comprised of reviews from both WalletHub users and ratings on other reputable websites. The rating was last updated on 11/26/2025.
Discover’s personal loans are some of the best on the market. They’re available nationwide; they offer the potential for low rates; and they don’t charge big fees upfront. Plus, the funding process is relatively quick, with the money available as soon as the next business day after approval.
The best part of Discover personal loans is their low cost. Discover has a 0% origination fee and a $0 prepayment fee. The only major fee they have is a $0 late fee. Discover’s loan APRs range from 7.99% - 24.99%. They’re not the absolute cheapest choice for people with pristine credit, as you can find lenders whose ranges start 1% - 2% lower. But the upper bound of 24.99% is relatively low in a market where APRs can reach up to 36%.
Discover isn’t explicit about what credit score you need to qualify for a personal loan, but the minimum is reportedly around 660. They do, however, provide a minimum income requirement: $25,000. And to be able to apply, you’ll need to have a Social Security number, though you can be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
Discover Personal Loan Review Highlights:
Discover personal loan rates:7.99% - 24.99%
Origination fee:0%
Late fee:$0
Funding timeline: As soon as the next business day
Loan amounts:$2,500 - $40,000. While that’s a decent range, there are plenty of lenders that offer bigger loans than that.
Payoff periods:36, 48, 60, 72 or 84 months. Many competing lenders don’t offer payment timelines longer than 60 months.
Customer satisfaction: Discover receives an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and has an average user rating of 4.0/5 on WalletHub
Pre-qualification: You can pre-qualify for a personal loan on Discover’s website. You can also try out WalletHub’s pre-qualification tool to see what other lenders might pre-qualify you.
Co-signer policy: Unfortunately, you won’t be able to share responsibility for a Discover personal loan with another person.
Discover is a bank that’s known primarily for being one of the four major card networks, alongside Visa, Mastercard and American Express. But their personal loans shouldn’t be overlooked. The 0% origination fee coupled with low rates and high customer satisfaction makes them an excellent choice. Below, you can see how WalletHub rates Discover in our three major categories: Terms, Requirements & Application, and Reviews & Transparency.

Do you know what excellent credit, no late payments, and lots of money in a savings account gets you at Discover: a closed bank account “due to a business decision”
I received a email saying suspicious activity on my account and to call discover. I called to shockingly find out they closed my account. I asked why and they replied, “all we can tell you is a business decision was made”.
But wait it gets even more crazy, I asked where all my money went? They said, “in 60 to 90 days it will be mailed out to you”. Luckily I have money in another bank, but if I didn’t I would be late on all my bills! I would stay far far away from Discover!!!

I been with them for more than 20yrs until this happen i realized that they will rip u off the 1st chance they get. U don't want to deal with discover card because they will try to ruin your credit by charging you for things you didn't buy etc and they don't accept your disputes when you dispute them. U better off without Discover Card. Look I'm a card holder and I stopped using their card when I saw them take my money or allow them to ruin my credit. I had to pay them for things I didn't buy to keep my credit in good standings with other companies. They refuse to go to arbitration.

@MahbodK Us too. 20 years as Discover customers and $20K in a savings account and a credit score of a FICO score of 800 got us more than $600 worth of disputed charges reapplied to our account because the some employee with the IQ of a drunken raccoon "reviewed" both transactions and found them "to be valid"

For over 20 years, I have received great service from Discover. I have always paid my account on time and have an excellent credit rating. Now, I will be closing my account after Discover charged my account for the same amount of $209, 45 times, when only once was authorized, and blamed the vendor. It took weeks to get most of the charges reversed, but 3 charges, totaling $627, remain. After each of four calls, the account representative assures me the issue is resolved, but the charges are still on my account and are now included in my November statement. I will either have to pay the amount or incur interest while I continue the battle. It is very stressful and disappointing that even speaking to a manager has not resolved the issue.

Secured card, and just about worthless for building credit. However, they do report on-time payments to 3 CBs, and your tradeline takes a tiny bump. Your score may go up 3-7 points over 2 years. However, you'll get your deposit back in 7-8 months if you pay on time and keep the balance below 30%. You'll never get a credit line increase, even if you pay it off in full every month. I went over 60% once while on a trip, and then paid it right off when I returned. No success. When you ask for a credit line increase, they'll bring up past late payments and negative marks from 4-6 years ago, despite their claim of an opportunity for a "fresh start". They'll issue a regular card after 7 years.
Well, I, as a recipient with whom I had been for several years, had been keeping track and had fallen into hardship. I had spoken to customer service support about my issues, asking for help and assistance and what they could do while I sent payment and refrained from using the card to get these payments down. Apparently, they can't work with their clients. I'm very disappointed to discover that they have been applying interest and fees on a recipient's account by going over the limits while I've been making payments. I feel that's just not fair to a recipient who has been paying on time and then gets slapped with this. If they were willing to negotiate or work with the recipients on trying to get the amount owed down, that would be great, but no! So, this rating is a two. It's very disappointing that credit card companies do this. I really appreciate your inconvenience.

Dishonest—will not protect consumers! Sides with scammers regardless of consumer proof; customer service spouts dogma and does not listen or look at obvious proof of fraud. Do business with more reputable credit cards!
We received the typical 'you're approved' emails and fliers. I did their 'no impact to your credit score' on their site and got a message that we were approved. Said we just needed to submit our supporting documents and give them account info for cards we wanted to pay off. Then they needed us to link our checking account so they could deposit the left over funds. After alllllll that, they came back 48 hours later and said we were denied, despite the steps we went through saying it was approved and they were paying our cards off and depositing money in our account. Had they said they needed that information to see if we were approved I'd never have given them access to all of our accounts! Good news is it made me realize consolidating would save us money, so I applied at our credit union, approved same day and money deposited immediately. Discover is the first account I paid off and closed. Good riddance!

I've used Discover for a credit card and decided to open a savings/checking account to gain access to Zelle. It was a terrible experience. First off, it took several months to even get access to Zelle. Finally, after getting access, anytime someone sends me money, it's stuck for several days because I can only transfer out $1000 a day. I would expect more from a bank the size of Discover.

Discover card, what can I say, it's an awesome card! Plus, they have numerous other benefits and a great cashback match. I only wish the balance amount offered for their secured card were higher. I recently learned it's best to keep utilization below 10% when starting out, rather than the traditional 30%, and having just $300 to work with means only using $30 at 10% versus the $90 at 30% traditionally used for optimal results. If it were higher, it would allow for more room, so new users trying to build credit would have more wiggle room to keep it below 10%. Had I been aware of this when applying for the card, I likely would not have applied and instead waited for my scores to improve with my Capital One card alone.

They don't tell you until after doing a hard inquiry that you must submit copies of your Social Security card among other identification. With identity theft concerns, I'm uncomfortable with that. I canceled my application. The hard inquiry is still on my credit score. I'm very dissatisfied with Discover!
This was my first Discover credit card and is most definitely still one of my top cards (I now have 18 credit cards, two of which are this one and the Discover it Chrome Cash Back CC). I never plan on getting rid of it! I had a Chapter 7 bankruptcy (medical debt) back in 2019, and two years later, Discover started my initial line of credit at $7,000. They then raised it much higher after the first 12-18 months. I've worked very hard to rebuild my credit, and I'm grateful to Discover and other credit card companies for giving me a chance and with high limits. There's no annual fee, but there is cash back, and the 5% cash back match for the first year was nice. Sure, some of the categories I'll never use for the 5% cash back, but it's a great card to have. 🙂
Discover is by far the worst credit card company I've ever dealt with. They attributed a $42.78 Walmart charge to me that Walmart confirmed never occurred. I even made a three-way call with Walmart, Discover, and myself on the line, where Walmart informed Discover directly that there was no transaction—yet Discover is still denying this and refusing to remove the charge. They promised to resolve the issue, waive the fees, and refund my money, but then they reneged on their promise. This is blatant dishonesty and bullying toward their own customer. On top of that, instead of rectifying the error, they added late fees and interest charges, and the balance increased from $42.78 to $120. If you want a card company that stands by you, avoid Discover at all costs.

Utter waste of time. Subprime rates with zero room for negotiation. 800+ credit and low DTI, yet received APR offers around 17.99%. I called and spoke to someone, and all they did was repeat what I saw online and received in email. They had no authority or additional knowledge whatsoever. I suspect this service was a lot better before Capital One, given the reviews. But now, I don't recommend.
