Discover® Reviews
The WalletHub rating is comprised of reviews from both WalletHub users and ratings on other reputable websites. The rating was last updated on 09/21/2025.
Discover’s personal loans are some of the best on the market. They’re available nationwide; they offer the potential for low rates; and they don’t charge big fees upfront. Plus, the funding process is relatively quick, with the money available as soon as the next business day after approval.
The best part of Discover personal loans is their low cost. Discover has a 0% origination fee and a $0 prepayment fee. The only major fee they have is a $0 late fee. Discover’s loan APRs range from 7.99% - 24.99%. They’re not the absolute cheapest choice for people with pristine credit, as you can find lenders whose ranges start 1% - 2% lower. But the upper bound of 24.99% is relatively low in a market where APRs can reach up to 36%.
Discover isn’t explicit about what credit score you need to qualify for a personal loan, but the minimum is reportedly around 660. They do, however, provide a minimum income requirement: $25,000. And to be able to apply, you’ll need to have a Social Security number, though you can be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
Discover Personal Loan Review Highlights:
Discover personal loan rates:7.99% - 24.99%
Origination fee:0%
Late fee:$0
Funding timeline: As soon as the next business day
Loan amounts:$2,500 - $40,000. While that’s a decent range, there are plenty of lenders that offer bigger loans than that.
Payoff periods:36, 48, 60, 72 or 84 months. Many competing lenders don’t offer payment timelines longer than 60 months.
Customer satisfaction: Discover receives an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and has an average user rating of 4.0/5 on WalletHub
Pre-qualification: You can pre-qualify for a personal loan on Discover’s website. You can also try out WalletHub’s pre-qualification tool to see what other lenders might pre-qualify you.
Co-signer policy: Unfortunately, you won’t be able to share responsibility for a Discover personal loan with another person.
Discover is a bank that’s known primarily for being one of the four major card networks, alongside Visa, Mastercard and American Express. But their personal loans shouldn’t be overlooked. The 0% origination fee coupled with low rates and high customer satisfaction makes them an excellent choice. Below, you can see how WalletHub rates Discover in our three major categories: Terms, Requirements & Application, and Reviews & Transparency.

Do you know what excellent credit, no late payments, and lots of money in a savings account gets you at Discover: a closed bank account “due to a business decision”
I received a email saying suspicious activity on my account and to call discover. I called to shockingly find out they closed my account. I asked why and they replied, “all we can tell you is a business decision was made”.
But wait it gets even more crazy, I asked where all my money went? They said, “in 60 to 90 days it will be mailed out to you”. Luckily I have money in another bank, but if I didn’t I would be late on all my bills! I would stay far far away from Discover!!!

I been with them for more than 20yrs until this happen i realized that they will rip u off the 1st chance they get. U don't want to deal with discover card because they will try to ruin your credit by charging you for things you didn't buy etc and they don't accept your disputes when you dispute them. U better off without Discover Card. Look I'm a card holder and I stopped using their card when I saw them take my money or allow them to ruin my credit. I had to pay them for things I didn't buy to keep my credit in good standings with other companies. They refuse to go to arbitration.

@MahbodK Us too. 20 years as Discover customers and $20K in a savings account and a credit score of a FICO score of 800 got us more than $600 worth of disputed charges reapplied to our account because the some employee with the IQ of a drunken raccoon "reviewed" both transactions and found them "to be valid"

I have 5 CDs that I opened, and Discover did a transfer from my bank account to fund them. I did not want to renew, and they advised me that if I wanted the cash to be transferred to my bank, it would be $30 per CD. It is a rip-off. Please be aware they add money by transfer but charge to return the money unless you pay $30. Do not even try to get them listed in your Living Trust name they were not interested.. Savers, be aware.

Fraudulent! After opening a second card, they required me to send personal ID or use Zoom to verify, versus phone call, email, or text (which they claimed would not work). I refused, and the card was closed, and my credit took a hit. All for nothing. Don't use Discover.

It was an okay card to begin with, but after it was absorbed by Capital One, and given that the best rewards are only offered during the first year, I use this card less often. The high interest rate is not ideal either.

Back on May 5th, 2025, I used my Discover Card at my local grocery store, which I frequent three or four times a week. My charges have never been over $30; within seconds of my purchase, there was $223.86 on my card. I lost my card and didn't realize it until later, and when I went back to the store, the checker had held it for me. I had no idea somebody had used it until I saw my next statement.
I called Discover on the 25th of May, and the nice person on the phone said this was fraud, as it was not in my hands, and Discover would go ahead and reverse the charges. Months later, I got a letter stating that upon reviewing the facts, it was determined no fraud occurred. I called, and the person I talked to essentially accused me of being dishonest, not exactly in those words. What I was told was that they don't just refund money when they don't know who committed the fraud. I've had a Discover Card for nearly 30 years. I have over $300,000 in three Discover bank accounts. I've been on the phone multiple times, not because of the money but because of the principle. I received another letter on August 27th, which was a duplicate of the August 7th letter that also stated no fraud occurred.
On the 5th of September, I finally got a hold of a supervisor. He was rude and curt with me and said they don't refund money because they determined this wasn't fraud.
This was fraud, in my opinion. I did not make the purchase, and as the first individual told me, the card was not in my hand, so it's not my responsibility. I was even told by one person when I called that I needed to go back to the store and argue with them about it. I don't know what kind of business Discover runs at this point, but they will have no more of my business. Discover is going to miss out on a lot of cash from both my checking and savings accounts and lose out on the significant amount of money I spend on the card monthly. I find Discover appalling and unprofessional. I am extremely honest and have never even made a late payment.

Discover cancelled my account after 20 years. Customer since 2001, but Discover closed my account in 2020 without reaching out to me directly at all. My credit score apparently dropped due to some fraudulent accounts being opened in my name (5 iPhones each from 2 carriers and Synchrony Care credit). Not only did they cut my credit off during COVID, but they also did nothing to assist me with my FICO score dropping and alerting me to the fraudulent charges. Rather than perform as the financial partner I counted on, I received a single email that went to Spam. 0$ Balance. Autopay on. Card expiry was 2023. Didn't find out until I tried to use the card. They claim to support customers with different credit scores, but that's a complete joke. Poor support of longtime customers.

I was approved for a Discover It cash back card in February of 2025. I began using the card solely to build up cash back. At one point, my outstanding balance was over $10,000. I never carried the balance, instead paying it in full before even receiving my bill each month. I had accumulated and cashed back $633.52. I received a letter from Discover saying they could not verify my financial information. My credit score is 812. They were able to verify it when they wanted me to get their card. This particular program matches your first year's cash back at the end of one year. They canceled my card on August 23, 2025. They would not pay the match because they said it was voided when they canceled my card. I feel this was unfair on Discover's part because they were not pleased that I wasn't carrying a balance and I was earning too much cash back.
I do not recommend Discover. I had a very clear case of overcharging by a vendor—they delivered fewer items, some damaged, and even charged me for products they never sent. Despite all the proof, Discover still sided with the vendor and closed my dispute. Discover does not protect customers in disputes—don't opt for it.

I had a Discover card for nearly 25 years (24+), and people would always ask why I bothered to keep it. I would tell them the card is accepted nearly everywhere and I have a cash back bonus card with no fees. Then, I was charged twice for something. It took nearly 5 hours on the phone (several phone calls) to get a manager who, after a long explanation, finally understood I had already paid for the item and assured me it would be removed from my balance. However, it never was. Despite several more calls and the fact that I had his name, title, and ID number, I was unable to get him back on the phone or the item removed from my balance. I had already spent over 7 hours on the phone. I finally paid off my balance with my cash back rewards and I will never use them again. It was a horrific experience. Their customer service went from 4.5 stars out of 5 to 0.5 stars in a couple of years.

Discovering a credit card can be a nightmare because the payment takes long to clear. They hit you with late fees and a large amount of interest. So, while your payment is processing and clearing, the balance goes towards the late fees and the negativity they added out of nowhere. Consequently, you're still stuck with the balance plus the negative charge. I added $5000 in March; only $3000 cleared, and they said the rest was put towards the interest, which is unacceptable. Do not take this card; find other options. Additionally, customer service will use the same excuse for every situation. It's the worst card ever and will definitely bring your credit down.

Worst credit card I have ever had. They offered a balance transfer, posted it, and told me it takes ten days... Ten days later, no transfer. Each time I call, I am told to wait ten days. Each time I call, I get some remote call center person in Chicago or Phoenix, or Dallas, etc. I ask for a supervisor, I get transferred to another remote call center person who tells me she is the end of the line and to wait ten days. I can't wait to clear this up, pay off the balance, and shred the card. WORST customer service EVER.

No customer protection! A company submitted a $17,000 check they were not authorized to cash, and Discover just gave them my money. Discover's Fraud Unit keeps citing Regulation E as to why they would not help me recover my funds or even just investigate. Three weeks later, I'm still out $17,000. They are very happy to receive my funds but can't even provide me with the specific rule that they say applies to my case, so they can't help me at all! Goodbye Discover, there are plenty of other online banks!

I have had the Discover it and the Discover chrome cards for nearly 4 years, and I absolutely love them! Great cashback on each card, excellent customer service, and consistent credit limit increases.
The Discover credit card is beyond magnificent... I'm actually applying for my second Discover card because they offer so much more than I could get from other credit card companies, especially the 'NO ANNUAL FEE' and 100% Cash Back MATCH at the end of the first year.
I graduated to an unsecured card in just over 8 months, and they returned my $200 deposit and bumped me up to a $500 credit limit.
Yes, other people have graduated in less time than I did, and some received higher initial credit limits. Everyone's situation is unique, and I still had quite a few negatives to clean up, but at least I graduated with a limit increase just as promised by Discover.
I'm such a believer in all things Discover, I've opened their FREE CASH BACK CHECKING ACCOUNT to receive the maximum of $3000/month, which equals a free $30 each month just for using their free, no fees, cash back checking account.
