American Express Serve is one of our favorite prepaid cards. It offers everything you need to say goodbye to your checking account or to check-cashing stores at a price point that’s hard to beat. Serve’s free online bill pay feature allows you to pay billers that don’t accept plastic, and its free mobile app enables you to fund your account simply by taking a picture of a check. There are only two fees to even worry about and both are avoidable. If you direct deposit at least $500 each month and withdraw money exclusively from MoneyPass ATMs, of which there are more than 24,000 nationwide, then Amex Serve will be completely free to use. As such, Serve makes for a great replacement checking account, check-cashing service or financial literacy teaching tool. And that’s all you really need to know. But if you want more information, make sure to check out our full American Express Serve review.
All the 1 star reviews are from people who obviously cannot read. They expect to use it like a debit card, which it clearly is not. Others complain about issues that they themselves are at fault for.

no consumer protection and very limited on merchants that except thier card
If you are searching for a card DO NOT go with AMEX!! For starters, you have to jump through so many hoops with the automated system just to speak to an actual person, and then you won't receive any help. I originally received a credit limit of $20k and everything was fine for the 3 years I had it, until they randomly decided to cut my available credit limit to only $9,600! Doing so caused my credit utilization to go from about 45% up to 100% since cutting my limit put my balance at the max amount. I called to negotiate with them to give me my original credit limit back if I paid the balance in full and they flat out told me no. All of my hard work trying to fix my credit has been ruined by this awful company. All of my other cards have been great and I've had no issues. Stay far far away from AMEX!
They canceled my account without warning, saying the business account that they allowed me to link to it was against their terms. If it’s against your terms (and why does it matter?!), then why do you allow me to add it? I canceled my credit card after 10+ years as a Preferred member. I don’t want to do business with a business without honor.

They did not meet my expectations to protect against fraudulent charges. Thanks for trying out for varsity. I'm also surprised Delta partners with them, not the best decision for their brand.

They move credit limit randomly affecting availability of credit, never had a late payment, I lose incentive to use the card to keep the benefits of the card to accrue higher Delta Medallion Status, which is the whole purpose for the specific credit card.
Wow, after 30 + years with them, I would never recommend them. The new process they use to evaluate your credit worthiness is absolutely random. If you have business and personal cards with them, they will change your credit limits in a day, so the things you have recurring charges will start to bounce. I run a business and had no limit until I accidentally made two payments, and the second bounced. You get busy; they will bounce your payment 3 times, then they will cap your limit to the balance on your card after they credit the bounced payment. Oh, and all your cards are frozen. This means that prior to payment, you had 60k. One 10k went through, but the second payment for 25k didn't, so the total on the card is 50k. They dropped your limit to 25k, so when they put the non-payment back on the card, you are over 25k over your limit. When you call, they tell you that it does not affect your credit limit. Oh my credit score is over 800.

Consumers should avoid this card at all costs. We never missed a payment, and we never even requested a credit limit increase, yet American Express raised our limit to $32,000 on their own. Then, while we were making the required minimum payments, they suddenly demanded a $4,000 payment, claiming we weren’t paying enough toward the balance. After that, they lowered our credit limit while keeping our interest rate at an outrageous 29.98%.
If they were truly concerned about helping customers manage debt responsibly, why refuse to lower the interest rate? Instead, they increase risk, penalize the customer, and profit from crushing interest charges. That feels less like customer service and more like corporate greed.
Based on our experience, stay away from this credit card. Read the fine print, protect yourself, and think twice before doing business with American Express.

In February, I made the mistake of using Apple Pay to load money onto my Hard Rock casino account. After realizing, I put it on my AMEX I called immediately. I was told by a representative that since I made payment so quickly I would only be incurring cash advanced interest for the days in between the charge and the Post date of my payment. After going back-and-forth with customer service, they opened a case on March 12 still no determination. Based on the attitude and demeanor of Leanne, the supervisor didn’t sound like AMEX cares. Because this is not a dispute, American Express will not even follow up with me to let me the customer know the outcome of the situation. I’m being told that I have to call in every so often to find out whether or not my case is still open or approved or denied. I find this misleading. If representative says one thing you should be held accountable
Update: on April 10th I spoke with someone from Amex management. She supposedly pulled the call and nothing of the sort was said. I was told the only way I can listen to the calls if I supply subpoena.
My wife was in the room while the call was on speaker. I was told one thing and now Amex is doubling down.

I have had a Amex platinum for over 30 years. I have a total of 2 complaints for charges that were in my opinion, a scam. Both pretended to be someone else online and both displayed a no refund policy. The latest was a travel site pretending to be the Omni Hotel in Richmond. I booked an extra day by mistake, thinking it will be no problem (hotels always allow you to reduce your stay if given enough notice) I called Amex less than an hour after my purchase and was told they couldn't do anything. I thought Amex would stand behind scammers but apparently they do not care that their cardholders are being scammed. I was told this merchant is their customer too and I authorized the charge. Way to back your cardholders! I will be closing this account as soon as I transfer my over a million points. Moral of the story - Just use your free Visa card. At least you wont have to pay $900.00 a year for them to do nothing for you.
They intentionally make it difficult to sync your transaction data with other vendors. Requiring confirmations that you logged in or else the data won't sync every other week. Its very annoying – just provide access to the data like every other institution. This should be a basic feature considering we pay over a $1,100 in membership fees for these cards per year.
