American Express Serve is one of our favorite prepaid cards. It offers everything you need to say goodbye to your checking account or to check-cashing stores at a price point that’s hard to beat. Serve’s free online bill pay feature allows you to pay billers that don’t accept plastic, and its free mobile app enables you to fund your account simply by taking a picture of a check. There are only two fees to even worry about and both are avoidable. If you direct deposit at least $500 each month and withdraw money exclusively from MoneyPass ATMs, of which there are more than 24,000 nationwide, then Amex Serve will be completely free to use. As such, Serve makes for a great replacement checking account, check-cashing service or financial literacy teaching tool. And that’s all you really need to know. But if you want more information, make sure to check out our full American Express Serve review.
All the 1 star reviews are from people who obviously cannot read. They expect to use it like a debit card, which it clearly is not. Others complain about issues that they themselves are at fault for.

This has been one of the best cards I've had over the years. I've had it for approximately 40 years. Communication with them is straightforward and easy; we talk to a human and not a recording. Their statements are easy to read, and their customer service is excellent. Their rewards are great. I get a selection of the kind of rewards I want, and I usually choose dining reward cards and department store reward cards.

When inquiring about upgrading the card from Gold to Silver, the sales associate misled me by stating I could get my prorated membership fees back if not satisfied. The AmEx Platinum Card benefits and customer service were very underwhelming on every level. It took multiple calls to get customer service to cancel the card. The customer service department would not refund my prorated membership fee. Philip Orencia, employee #86422, did not even try to find a solution. I was a member since 2008. This is how bad their customer service has been and has repeatedly demonstrated over the past few months.

Their automated phone system is so bad, both automated and with inadequate capacity, and with no line through which you can call a real person, that one cannot get fraud concerns totally rectified. I'm almost ready to cut my Amex Amazon Prime Card in half. My contact number is [redacted]. My name is David Pritchard.

American Express personal loans are the best. Preapprovals and soft pulls are available if you already have products with them. I started with a 10K loan offer and finally received a 42K offer at 8.99%. I only took out $25K and paid it back in several months to build credit.

Careful with this card. I received a special targeted 15-month 0% promo in the mail, but somehow I was only approved for the 12-month one. It was a headache dealing with AMEX the entire time I had this card. They were very uncooperative.
They are the most difficult credit card companies to deal with. The prestige American Express once possessed has long since faded. The only thing unique is that their fees are much higher than Visa or Mastercard. I applied twice for a card with an 840 credit score and was rejected both times. The last time it happened, I applied at Citibank and Chase and the cards were approved immediately, each having over $12,000 as the credit line. They need to improve; they are becoming obsolete.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. A $600 charge on a credit card I had in my possession, yet fraud will not remove. Absolute worst service, yet I can prove my location at the exact time of the charge. Amex is engaging in fraud.

Worthless credit card. They don't care about you at all. You're just a number. Missed the fine print over a 60-day limit for balance transfers. I couldn't make the payment due to waiting on an insurance check, went over by 13 days and they still refused to give a balance transfer offer. The only thing excluding me was the 13 days and the only thing preventing it was them just being unwilling to say yes. Perfect credit, perfect accounts, but miss a timeline and they don't care about you at all.

It's amusing that they offer the option to pay over time for the business platinum card, but it seems they don't actually favor this approach. Once the card is used, email notifications flood in, warning of potential declines and scrutinizing future purchases. If a company offers a service, it should adhere to its promises. This does not reflect the standards of a four-star company. Badgering customers, especially if they happen to be late occasionally, without offering any extra benefits or living up to the card's advertised perks is disappointing. I am relieved that they closed my card today. Losing my father has taken a toll on me this year, and their payment system hasn't been accommodating, making it difficult for me to pay from my phone due to constant issues with email verification codes. I would expect a billion-dollar company to have a more user-friendly system. Moreover, their customer service has been unsatisfactory. I have no intention of reopening the card or seeking a reconsideration. During a phone call to make my payment today, I emphasized that I did not wish to reactivate the card or reconsider my decision. There's no reason to plead with any company to accept my business. And why should I accept a card whose benefits do not justify the offers they promote? I believe I will be treated better by another credit card company. I certainly won't miss paying a nine hundred dollar annual initiation fee. By not having the card, I will be saving that amount. They have lost a valuable customer. Some may view this card as a status symbol, but to me, it's not worth it, and neither is the company. Since they closed my account, I will make payments of twenty-five dollars a month until I settle the full balance. Just today, they mentioned sending the account to a collection agency, as if I lacked funds, when I have thousands in the bank. I made a four hundred and twenty dollar payment today, and that will be the last substantial payment from me since they've cancelled my card. From now on, it will be twenty-five dollars a month. Ultimately, the notion that we're even obligated to pay these bills is debatable. In reality, we are the creditors, and they are the debtors. I look forward to the day when this system is overhauled and power is restored to the people.

If you're ever in a situation where you need to file a dispute claim for their blue credit card, you're going to be in for some tough luck. Their customer service is ridiculously subpar, they keep pushing the resolution date further and further, and they will not credit the amount back to your card. Now, I’m stuck paying for a rental car that was both cancelled and never driven. I strongly dislike American Express. I thought that they were better than this. I could only recommend American Express to an enemy.

After more than twenty-five years as an American Express customer—virtually flawless in my payment history, with only one late payment in a quarter-century—I never expected the company to show such a stunning lack of appreciation for my loyalty.
I recently paid my balance in full less than 24 hours after it posted, only to find a $40 fee added to my account. Given my long, responsible track record, I expected what any reasonable customer would: a quick review, a moment of common sense, and a simple one-time courtesy waiver. Instead, I was met with a flat, impersonal refusal—no exception could be made.
It's not the $40 that matters. It's the disrespect.
American Express has long marketed itself as the gold standard of customer service and premium care, but when given the opportunity to demonstrate those values to a loyal, decades-long customer, it hid behind rigid policy rather than exercising even a shred of discretion.
The irony is that with my excellent credit score, I receive multiple credit card offers every week, many with better perks, more flexible customer service, and superior rewards. Until now, I stayed with American Express out of loyalty and habit. But this experience made one thing painfully clear: that loyalty is not reciprocated.
As a result, I will be closing my American Express account and seriously considering one of the many competing cards eager to treat reliable customers with the respect they deserve.
If this is how American Express chooses to value a customer of 25+ years, they shouldn't be surprised when those customers decide to take their business elsewhere.
